Dr Leon Smith

oral & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEON

Dr Leon Smith is a Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with degrees in Medicine and Surgery (University of Melbourne) and Dentistry (University of Western Australia).

After completing both dental training and medical and surgical training, Dr Leon Smith completed advanced surgical training in Melbourne and achieved Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons as a Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

He also completed post-fellowship training in Orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery, Facial Trauma Surgery and Head and Neck Surgery. Leon has a special interest in orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery, oral and craniofacial implantology (including zygoma implants) and facial trauma surgery. 

Leon was born in Port Hedland (WA) and has a long history of clinical practice in Western Australian and the Northern Territory. He practiced extensively in both general dentistry and medicine prior to completing specialist surgical training.

Leon has served as Federal Councillor for the Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is actively involved in the training of undergraduate (dental students) and post-graduate (specialist trainees). He has taught at the Dental School at the University of Western Australia and is a consultant at the Royal Perth Hospital, which involves providing on-call surgical services.

Leon has 3 children (all boys) and a Hungarian Viszla “Buddy” aka Budman. He enjoys motorbike riding (dirt bikes), and competed in the Kalgoorlie Desert Race in 2020 and the Finke Desert Race in 2021. In 2022, Leon is planning to cross the Simpson Desert on a motorbike!

 

Special Interests

Implants – Single tooth, All on 4, Zygoma. Dr Smith is the surgeon known to treat complex cases or patients with difficult anatomy. 

Extractions – wisdom teeth, patients needing GA or IV treatment, medically compromised patients.

Orthognathic Surgery – correction of misaligned jaws. Often these patients are referred by an orthodontist.

Facial Trauma – most patients will seek treatment in the public setting. Occasionally patients will ask to have surgery privately with Dr Smith to avoid waiting or to make use of their private health. Dr Smith will review this case for appropriate triage to seek care in the private setting.

Impacted Tooth Exposure – often a referral will come from an orthodontist who requires Dr Smith to remove bone and expose and impacted tooth.
